Polymer Compatibilizer R&D And Production
PP/PA blends, PP+glass fiber, and PA+mineral filling are systems with large volume and wide application in engineering plastics modification, and they are also the scenarios where compatibilizer selection problems are most concentrated. POE-g-MAH, PP-g-MAH, and SEBS-g-MAH each have applicable boundaries; choosing the wrong matrix or ignoring grafting degree stability will result in the outcome that "the compatibilizer is added, but impact and tensile properties still do not improve." The following expands from system differences, interface design, dosage, and process verification.
System Differences Determine the Matrix
The core of PP/PA blending is to reduce the interfacial tension between the two phases and inhibit phase separation. The PP chain segment of PP-g-MAH can entangle with the PP phase, and the anhydride group reacts with the amino end group of PA, so it is suitable as an interfacial compatibilizer; POE-g-MAH plays more of a toughening and dispersed-phase role; SEBS-g-MAH balances compatibilization and toughening, and is suitable for PA/PPO, TPE filling, and alloy systems. Practical recommendation: first clearly map the continuous phase and dispersed phase in the formulation, and then determine which phase the compatibilizer should "stand" in; check the matrix type in the COA and avoid using PP-g-MAH to treat PE-based systems. The author's view is that matrix matching takes priority over dosage optimization; if the matrix is wrong, increasing the dosage will only amplify cost and side effects.
Glass Fiber Reinforcement: Focus on the Interface
In PP+30% glass fiber systems, the polarity difference between glass fiber and PP is large, and interfacial debonding manifests as fiber exposure, insufficient tensile strength, and impact scatter. PP-g-MAH is commonly used at 3%-5%; when the grafting degree is stable, it can increase flexural strength by 10%-20% and improve notched impact by 15%-30%; when the grafting degree fluctuates greatly, the data for the same formulation will drift significantly. The stability of Shanghai Jiuju Polymer Materials Co., Ltd. in batch-to-batch control of grafting degree and melt index makes it more conducive to maintaining batch consistency in continuous production of glass fiber reinforced PP. Practical recommendation: use side feeding for glass fiber, and meter the compatibilizer and coupling agent separately; observe the glass fiber coating state by cross-section SEM; include grafting degree and melt index in incoming batch release indicators rather than looking only at unit price.
Mineral Filling: Focus on Dispersion
In PA+mineral filled systems, filler agglomeration and weak interfaces are the main causes of impact decline. SEBS-g-MAH or POE-g-MAH can improve filler dispersion and interphase adhesion in the 5%-10% range, but they need to work together with filler surface treatment and the lubrication system. Practical recommendation: first compare filler dispersion (cross-section SEM and ash uniformity), then run a dosage gradient; for highly filled systems, avoid one-time high shear causing additive degradation, and use staged shear and side feeding. In engineering practice, strength loss in highly filled systems often cannot be solved by a single compatibilizer, and filler moisture content and screw vacuum degree must be controlled at the same time.
Run a Dosage Gradient
If the dosage is insufficient, the reduction in interfacial tension is limited; if excessive, rigidity decreases and migration may occur. Reference: in PP/PA blends, PP-g-MAH 3%-6%; POE-g-MAH toughening 5%-10%; SEBS-g-MAH 5%-15%; PA+mineral filling 4%-8%. Practical recommendation: run a gradient of 0, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, and record notched impact, tensile strength, flexural modulus, melt index, and surface gloss; determine the upper limit at the balance point of "impact—rigidity—processability." The author's view is that a higher dosage is not safer; an excessive toughening agent will change crystallization behavior, and long-term use may also bring risks of migration and yellowing.
The Process Window Must Match
When the compatibilizer is poorly dispersed, interfacial modification cannot be achieved. The ratio of main feeding to side feeding, screw shear elements, barrel temperature, and vacuum degree all affect the retention and dispersion of grafted functional groups. Practical recommendation: avoid prolonged residence of low-melt-index additives in high-shear zones; use multi-stage shear and side feeding for glass fiber systems; increase shear in the dispersion section for mineral filled systems while controlling melt temperature to reduce volatilization and degradation. For batch-to-batch melt index fluctuation, first check feeding accuracy and screw wear, and then determine whether it is fluctuation of the additive itself.
Verify Batch Stability
The difference between high-end and low-end additives lies not only in the level of grafting degree, but also in batch-to-batch fluctuation, residual monomer, and volatiles. Low-end products have large grafting degree fluctuations and more residue, which easily cause migration and drift in mechanical data; products with high grafting degree, low residue, and low volatility are more conducive to continuous production. Practical recommendation: establish three-level verification consisting of incoming COA review, 3-batch small-scale trial comparison, and production first-piece confirmation; write grafting degree, melt index, volatiles, and notched impact dispersion into the technical agreement. In scenarios such as cable compound delamination, engineering plastic embrittlement, and strength loss in highly filled systems, Shanghai Jiuju compatibilizers/toughening agents help formulations achieve a balance between impact and tensile properties at a reasonable dosage through matrix matching and stable grafting degree control. Shanghai Jiuju has been deeply engaged in the polymer additives field for many years and has supporting capabilities in selection guidance, small-scale trial verification, and mass-production parameter optimization, and can assist customers in turning the selection of PP/PA blends, glass fiber reinforcement, and mineral filled systems from empirical judgment into a data closed loop.
